My Goal Race: Atlanta Women’s 5k

Time: 31.23

Mileage: 3.1 miles

Weight: 159 Pounds

I had a new Personal Record this morning: 31.23.

Before the race began, the training group met to have a picture of all of us who participated.

The race went well.  The group I’ve been training with meets at The Whole Foods in Buckhead on W Paces.  Our usual routes include a massive amount of hillwork.  The route of the 5k included very few hills.  Therefore, it was easy to run this flat course compared to what we normally train on.

The training program has helped me get to a place where I enjoy running.  Before, it was hard for me to want to go out and run, no matter how bad I wanted to.   I am amazed that I believe 20 minutes of running is nothing.

The coach who has been training us, Tina Klein, says that we are doing more than the average American does just by getting out there.  This is true.

Running clears the mind, helps the heart, and is good for your soul.

Taper Week

Time: 26.30

Mileage: 2.7 miles

Weight: 159 pounds

Taper week is a week where you back off your normal running.  During your runs, you fall back about 10 or 15 minutes than what you can actually do.  This is supposed to rest your body so that on race day, you can push yourself and do your best during the race.

We were to log 25 minutes tonight.  After repeatedly running for 35-40 minutes, it seems so odd to scale back and go 25 or less.  Thursdays run is only 20 minutes.  This seems incredibly short compared and easy.

Of course, that amazes me that I have worked consistently and been able to build myself up to 35-40 minutes of running.  Before starting this training group, I wasn’t able to run 10 minutes without stopping to walk.

The race is on Saturday.  I’m super excited.  The Atlanta Women’s 5k will be only women, provide massages after the race, food, vendors set up to provide information about various stores.  The race is at Candler Park in Little 5 Points.

Course Run & Fitness Expo

Time: 33 minutes

Mileage: 3.2 miles

Weight: 159 pounds

The course run this morning was a little strange.  Since it wasn’t the morning of the race, the roads weren’t blocked off, the course wasn’t marked, so we ended up turning down the wrong road a couple of times.

Around Atlanta, there are about 150 women who were doing the women’s on the move training program in different locations.  All women who were signed up in the program were allowed to take part in this course run.  Half of us were turned a wrong way when they got our attention to turn around, so needless to say, we did a little more than was necessary this morning.

The course itself is much easier than what we have been doing during our Tuesday night training runs, and a breeze compared to the trail that Mallory and I usually run on Saturdays.

Tomorrow is the ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon.  This morning, there was a Health and Fitness Expo at the Georgia Dome.  Mallory and I attended after our course run.

It was very interesting to see all of these different speciality products for running.  Several of the booths were brand names like Addidas, Nike, New Balance, etc.  There were local people set up like Phidippides, West Stride, Fleet Feet Atlanta, etc.

Of course, there were products that were being advertised that are new to running.  For example, Five Fingers are these type of shoes that are supposed to equal to running barefoot.  Running barefoot is a controversial topic right now in running.  The idea is that by running barefoot you are running naturally, sort of like Kenyans run.  They run barefoot.

A product has developed for women: Skirt Sports.  They’re running skirts.  There are also running dresses.  The company also makes products for cycling.  Obviously, it geared to women; however, every year, they have a race called the skirtchaser.  Every female participant receives a skirt in their entry fee.  The women start their race at 5:30.  Men begin at 5:33 and receive a shirt that says “I chased a skirt.”

The expos are great places to receive discounts.  Much of the products were either on sale or a percentage off.  They had a lot of winter running wear that was on sale since it is nearing time to put all of that stuff away.

This upcoming week is going to be a taper week.  The week will consist of cutting back on time running so that you conserve energy for the race that will be on Saturday.

2 Weeks to go

Time: 31.25

Mileage: 3.01

Pounds: 159

There are two weeks left of training with the Women’s on the Move training program.  There is a course run this coming Saturday.  The race for the Atlanta Women’s 5k is a week from then.

It seems that more people who orignally signed up for the program is coming back out to finish this up.  The registration included the entry fee to the Atlanta Women’s 5k, so maybe, they think this will help their cause next week.

I feel great about the race coming up.  I finally have no more hip pain, and the weather is getting better.  I feel like I can run the entire 5k.

I’m ready for it.

Shamrock ‘N Roll

Time: 33.53

Mileage: 5K (3.1 miles)

Weight: 159 pounds

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, I ran the Shamrock ‘N Roll 5k at Atlantic Station in Atlanta.

I was very impressed with how well organized it was.  They had a band or some type of live music at each mile which, of course, was really cool.  I haven’t seen that done before.  There was a dog walking division and a stroller division.  It was great.

Too bad, I didn’t prepare myself well enough.

My husband and I had a date night last night, and then, we went to the bar where we have friends who work there.  There were people there that we hadn’t seen in a really long time, so needless to say, we spent much more time there than I should have…considering my run this morning.

I thought it was going to take me forever to run the 5k, but I surprised myself and had a new PR for a race.  The next race will probably be much better since I really didn’t feel well starting out.

I’m excited about the next time.

Coming from Injuries

Time: 41.23 Minutes

Mileage: 3.8 miles

Weight: 159 pounds

The running group ran 40 minutes tonight.  I am quite pleased and shocked with myself.  I did it.  I ran the whole thing.

There were quite a few more hills than what I am used to though.  We had to extend our run more than normal because of the extra time.  The extra mileage was quite hilly.  It was rough with my hip pain. It just kept on trying to be a full fledged painful experience, but it finally eased off after the first 20 minutes.

Stretching is supposed to ease my hip flexor.  I have a race on Sunday, so I have yet another sports massage on Friday.  Hopefully, this one will be better.

Sports Massages

Time: 0 minutes

Mileage: 0 miles

Weight: 161 pounds

Sports massages are defininetly not “ooohhh….massage…this is so relaxing.”

My right hip feels like someone has taken a baseball bat and just beaten the crap out of it.

Overall, great experience though.  It was an incredibly deep tissue massage complete with stretching afterward.

The therapists has saved me over $100 from going to the doctor about the sharp pain that I’ve had in my hip.  She told me that the problem I’m having is because I am running too many hills, and it is causing my hip flexor to become over worked.  It should heal with appropriate stretching and staying on flat ground until I can run without any pain.

She also said I’m probably not going to be able to run the race I signed up for tomorrow morning, the Chatahoochee Road Race.  I guess I’ll just lose 30 dollars, again.  I lost money on Thanksgiving because I was so sick I couldn’t get out of bed that morning.

I went to Sports Massage and Integrated Therapy.  At first, I thought it was a very sketchy place, but after I got into the room, I realized it was very credible.  She had tons of photos all over the walls of athletes that she had worked with at various sportings events.  It was very interesting to see.  The stretches that she showed me should help to work out the kinks in my hip.  She also recommended another massage before my big race on the 27th: the Atlanta Women’s 5k.  I’m having another one in a week.

Weather and Runs

Time: 35 Minutes

Mileage: 3.17

Weight: 161 pounds

Freak snow storm today has totally messed up my plans to go to the running group.  It started snowing heavily at 9:00 this morning.  Of course, as usual, my students were acting like fools.  School was closed at 1:00 this afternoon.  It kept snowing the rest of the day until about 5:00.  It suddenly stopped and the snow melted.

I already had went to the treadmill by the time I realized the snow was melting and it would be fine to run with the group at our usual meeting.  I decided it would probably be better if I ran flat anyway to see if the hills were the cause of my hip pain.

No luck.  I started getting the sharp pain in my hip 28:38 into the 35 minute run.  I pushed through it, finished the run, and went limping home, up my 2 flights of stairs to put an ice pack on my hip.

I have e-mailed my training coach.  She has suggested to go see a sports chiropractor and have a sports massage done.  I’ve never heard of a sports massage.

I have one scheduled on Friday.

No running until then, and I can’t stand the thought of it.

Chattahoochee Trail

Time: 31.25

Mileage: 2.89

Weight: 161 pounds

I’ve lost 2 more pounds and can tell a huge difference in how well my clothes are fitting.

I ran the Chattahoochee trail this morning.  There is a trail that goes along the Chattahoochee in a couple of different places.  The one I’m running goes along the river in Fulton county/Smyrna/Vinings.  It is extremely hilly after the first half mile.

I consider it my hill/speedwork.  Speedwork is what helps you become faster in your pacing.  I really want to work on my speed and having a consistent, higher speed that what I have now.  Currently, I’m at about a 11.30 mile.  It’s certainly not good.  However,  at least, I am running.

Before one run we had, our coach, Tina, said that by running, even one time a week, we are doing more than the average American does.  I believe that whole heartedly.

Back to the trail.

On the way back, coming up the last hill, my hip began to act up again.  I walked up the hill and finished running the rest of the way back.

I really hope I haven’t done anything too bad.  I guess I need to take more time off.  Usually, on Mondays, I do weight training and walk.  I think it will be in my best interest if I lay off of it and let my hip rest, in hopes that it will be good as new on Thursday.  However, I am finding it hard to convince myself that it will be okay to take one day off. (Sundays are usually a rest day anyway).

We shall see…once again.

Running after Recovery

Time: 24.12

Mileage: 2.16

Weight: 163 pounds

Mallory had been out of running for a little over a week until this past Tuesday.  She took a week off, rested her muscles, and is back, as good a s new.

On the way out, my hip started acting up a little bit going up the first hill.   After that, it was stretched out, and I was totally fine.

I’m glad.  I was really worried my hip was going to prevent me from keeping up my progess.

This mornings’  run was great.  It was easy.  It was cold, but other than that, it was great.  Mallory and I both kept up a good pace and speed and it was enjoyable.
